wrong side knitting
Help with knitting terminology please?
What does it mean by right side and wrong side. Is it which side the string is on? As in knit stitch is in the back and the purl stitch is in the front?
I hate those terms, they can be confusing. The *right* side is the outer or public side that is generally seen when a garment is worn or an item is used. The *wrong* side, or reverse side, is the side worn next to the skin or the back of an item.
Stockinette is not always knit side out and purl side in, it can depend on the pattern, since *reverse stockinette* is purl side out and knit side in. Garter stitch has no true public or reverse side, and a garter stitch piece with no shaping has no right or wrong side (with shaping you do need to designate one side as public--use a safety pin pinned through the center of what you designate as public--and make sure your shaping is done on the correct edge).
