reading knitting pattern charts
Help w/wrong side row of knitting chart?
I'm trying to follow a knitting pattern from a chart for the first time - up to now, everything I've knitted has been from written directions, e.g., "K2, P3, YO, P to end of row". This pattern is for a cable stitch.
I understand how to read the chart, I think, but I don't understand how the wrong side rows are to be knitted. They are not included in the chart, and the pattern instructions only state, "Work all stitches on the wrong side as they appear." What does "AS THEY APPEAR" mean??

That's not a very clear instruction. What they meant to say was, "knit the knits and purl the purls."
If you look at the chart, only odd numbered rows are given. The even numbered rows (the back side) are not represented on the chart. Having done cables before, I know that as I knit along on the back side, whenever I see a knit stitch, I will knit it. Whenever I see a purl stitch, I will purl it. All of the wrong side stitches will be either knits or purls. There will be no increases, decreases, or stitch manipulations.
So this isn't a problem with you reading the chart, but with the way the written instructions were given.
Remember that purl stitches have little collars that are pushed up against the needle. That's how you can tell them from knit stitches.

You may already know this, but I'll include it just in case. Charts are always read from the bottom up starting at the lower right corner. In flat knitting, right side rows are knit right to left and wrong side rows are knit left to right. When wrong side rows are present, they will be given using reverse symbols. So when you read the wrong side row and see a symbol for "knit" you must translate in your head and do the reverse, which is a purl. Numbers for the wrong side rows will appear on the left side of the graph (if given) to indicate that you start on the left end of the row when knitting wrong side rows.
This is true whether the chart is for a cable, lace, or color work.
