Introduction To The Seattle Freeze

Seattle is one of the toughest places to be single. Highly educated, liberal, coffee addicted and fit, Seattleites are generally friendly people, but they show that friendliness in untraditional ways. Rather than be outgoing and kind to others, men and women in Seattle have decided that the best way to be friendly is to simply leave people alone to do as they please.

With everyone leaving everyone else alone, it has become “unnatural” to talk to strangers. Indeed, those that do try to go out of their way and meet someone new are seen as strange and possibly “off,” and are often tolerated until the moment that the Seattleite has the opportunity to leave. These behaviors have become known as the “Seattle Freeze.”

The Effects of the Seattle Freeze

The Seattle freeze has caused dating in Seattle to be an incredibly difficult task. As a Seattle single, you are forced to try to meet people that are within your group of friends, because the idea of venturing out and meeting strangers is frowned upon. Even at bars – considered one of the most common places to talk to strangers in the country – Seattleites tend to go with their friends and leave with their friends, rarely saying as much as a “hello” to anyone they don't already know.

This can be a big problem. If your friends are a tight knit group (as is often the case in Seattle), rarely do single members of the opposite sex get invited in, and when they do you have to complete with every other single member of the group just to go out on a single date. Being a Seattle single is very, very tough.

How Are People Dating in Seattle?

The Seattle freeze has made dating very difficult, but certainly not impossible. It is just that the way men and women in Seattle are forced to meet other people is very limited. If you are a Seattle single, and there are no dating options in your clique, chances are your best bet is to:

>> Meet someone at work.

>> Meet someone online.

>> Meet someone through friends, often as a setup.

Dating in Seattle has become strategic. If you are a Seattle single, you do your best to get to know someone within your clique that has another, separate clique elsewhere. You then try to meet those friends separately, and hope (usually unsuccessfully) that one of the members of the group is single and looking. If not, you try again with another friend. In the end, everyone is using everybody to try to meet someone new, because doing so in a bar, club, cafe, grocery store or on the street is next to impossible.

Times are slowly changing in Seattle. Seattleites have begun to recognize their own natural tendency to avoid all new people, and are trying their best to overcome it. But for now, the Seattle freeze has made dating in Seattle an uphill battle, and for those Seattle singles that are looking for someone to truly care about, chances are they are going to have to work very hard to find them.
