loose knitting stitch
Knitting open stitch help?
I am doing this volunteer project http://www.dosomething.org/actnow/volunteer/help-provide-comfort-victims-domestic-violence for school but under the guidelines it says the scarves have to be done with an open stitch.. would that mean a particular type of stitch or could I just knit looser with larger needles? I know how to knit basic scarves but no fancy stitches of any type!
You could knit a worsted-weight yarn on large needles (US #13 or #15, or even #35 for example). Or a bulky ribbon yarn on US #15 or #17 needles. Either would provide an "open" stitch. If you have access to the very large needles, you might knit some swatches to see what you think of the fabric you get.
Or you could use a lacy pattern with any weight yarn. An easy lacy pattern in 4 rows:
Cast on an odd number of stitches.
Row 1: K1 *yo, k2tog, repeat from * to the end of the row.
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: K2, *yo, k2tog, repeat from * to the last stitch, k1
Row 4: Purl
When you have knit the length you want, bind off. Steam lightly. If desired, thread ribbons through one or more rows of lacy holes.
Added: yo = yarn over, wrap the yarn over the needle without knitting it. The yo forms a hole.
k2tog = knit two stitches together. This creates a decrease, which balances the extra stitch formed by the yo
