Knitting gauge: 26 St st and 32 rnds - what the heck?
Hi - I am kmitting gloves and it says this for the gauge and it should equal 4"/10cm over St st size 3 dpn. I get the 26 St st but I havent seen an "and 32 rnd" before. I get 3"/10cm with the yarn I have and dpns with just the 26 St st, so now am I suppose to do a few rounds and add them togther? Thanks in advance!
Needle sizes in patterns are the suggested starting point, not an absolute. This is why you knit a swatch so you can see if you need to change sizes. If you are getting 6 1/2 stitches to the inch widthwise and 8 rounds (rows) to the inch in height you've got gauge. Many people mistakenly assume that if they cast on the number of stitches in 4 inches the gauge is supposed to be and knit for that many rows or rounds they will have a 4 inch square. This is not always, or even often, true. You need to knit a swatch (and on circular items your swatch should be worked in the round, flat gauge may not match circular gauge because in circular knitting the stitches are knit in only one direction) large enough to measure an inch worth of stitches across with out stretchin and upwards and do the math.
