knitting socks patterns
when knitting socks how do you know how many stitches you need for the heel flap?
and also for the heel turn? I have quite small feet so I was trying to make my own pattern but I am not sure how to figure out the number of stitches i need. If you can help me it would be greatly appreciated.
Half of the stitches are usually used for the heel flap. If you cast on, say, 72 stitches, you'd work them in 1 x 1 or 2 x 2 rib (or whatever pattern you like) for the desired length (say 7") and then change to stockinette for a few rounds. Then you would start working the heel flap over 36 stitches. Typically, you'd knit as many rows as stitches, plus 1, and then turn the heel. In this example, I'd have a 2-row pattern of Row 1: s1, K1 and Row 2: slip only the first stitch and purl the rest.
If you're working on 3 DPNs, typically you would readjust the stitches on the needles so that the round starts in the middle of the heel flap and the heel flap is on one needle (with the 36 instep stitches evenly divided on the other two needles). If you're working on 2 circular needles, you'll have half the stitches on each circ already, and if you're doing Magic Loop on one long circ, half the stitches will be on the front and half on the back, so they're set up for working on just the heel flap.
To turn the heel, typically I would purl across half plus 2, then p2tog, p1, and turn. The second row, slip the first stitch and knit across 8 sts, then k2tog, k1, and turn. Third row, slip the first stitch, purl across until you get to the stitch before the "gap", p2tog, p1, turn. Then repeat the last 2 rows until you've used all the stitches and ended with a knit row.
Next, you pick up the stitches at the sides of the heel flap for the gussets. You pick up one stitch for each two rows. If you remembered to slip the first stitch of every row, this part is easy. First pick up the side stitches, then knit across the instep, then pick up the other side stitches and knit across the heel. Next, you decrease the gusset stitches every other row until you are back to the original number of stitches.
