Amish Rockers: Beautiful Memories
Remember those cherished memories of the summers you spent with your grandparents as a child? Every day seemed to be a little slower-paced than the rest of the year, filled with smells of baking, sounds of laughter and the click of your grandmothers knitting needles, and an overall feeling joy. The one image that stands out among all others: your grandparents the morning or evening, side by side, him drinking his coffee, her knitting a blanket, scarf or hat, both in their Amish rockers.
Your favorite time of the day was when both of them were there, in their chairs, telling stories of how they met during the war, stories about your mom when she was your age. You would sit between them in your own Amish rocker, sipping ice-cold milk and nibbling one of Nana’s oatmeal bars. The smooth curves of the chair were like a huge hand holding you.
Perhaps your grandmother had knitted two pillows; one for the seat and another for the back, and you would snuggle against them and wait to fall asleep to the sound of their voices.
Your grandparent’s Amish rockers were twins in mahogany, dark and gleaming, yours was a light oak color, and about 2/3 the size of theirs. Your grandfather had a local craftsman make yours just for you, custom-sized. You got it for your third birthday, and although you don’t remember that birthday, you don’t remember a time when you didn’t have your rocker.
The Next Generation
As you pack up your daughter’s suitcase and carry it downstairs, your phone rings. It’s your Dad letting you know that he’s gotten your rocker down from the attic, and your Mom has just cleaned it with a nice wood soap. It’s all ready for your daughter’s first summer trip to her grandparents, ands you know that she’ll be building some of the beautiful memories that you have, and you’re sure that Amish rockers will have a part in those memories.
