knitting in the round
Quick question about knitting in the round?
I want to knit a beanie on double-pointed needles. It's a really simple YO lace pattern (i've only been knitting a couple of months). I was just wondering if the number of stitches has to divide evenly onto my three needles. I'm having trouble finding a number that fits the stitch pattern, divides by three, and isn't big enough for King Kong!

The stitches don't have to be the same number. It can be easier if you break up the number of repeats of the stitch pattern and keep that consistent - you might have two repeats on one needle, three on the next one, two on the last one. Or use more needles to get the numbers to work out. This can also make your knitting look neater in the end because there is less stress at the joins between needles. Stress = ladders. The smaller the angle between the needles, the less stress.
Another option is to use a 12" or 16" circular knitting needle for the body of the hat. Just be sure you have a marker to show you where the end of the row sits. I use circular needles for hats all the time - no stress at all! You will need to switch to DPNs at the top when you decrease, once the number of stitches gets too small for the circular needle.
