Does it matter which method you use to bind off- knit or purl?
I'm trying to learn how to knit, and I see 2 different methods to bind off- either by knitting or purling. What I want to know is when do you use each method or does it matter? Is it just a preference thing, like if you prefer to purl, you purl? Or is there a specific bind off method depending on the project?
Yes, both of these methods will produce a different finish. Which one to use depends on your own personal preference -- but be consistent throughout the project. Usually, the directions will state how to bind off.
Do your sample swatch and try out both methods on half a row each and then see which one seems to work the best for you for this particular project. That is the only way you will know.
I suggest you take a beginner knitting class at your lys before you get to much further. There is much you need to learn -- correctly -- before you create some bad habits that will be nearly impossible to correct later. Classes are offered all over the place.. just ask around. It will be well worth it.
