Why do I have excess yarn between my knitting needles?
I am a beginner knitter. I have a very hard time after I cast on because I keep getting a strand of yarn in between the knitting needles that gradually gets longer as I knit. Sometimes this piece of yarn gets tangled or so long that it discourages me to keep knitting. I always wind up taking unraveling the whole row. Can anyone tell me why this happens and what I am doing wrong? I hope to someday knit socks, but I can't seem to progress in knitting with this problem because it effects my entire first row.
What method are you using to cast on? If you're using the "Single Cast On" (also known as the backward loop method) you'll end up with long strands between stitches on your first row, unless you knit very evenly. A very easy method to learn to cast on, but not very practical for beginners.
I use the Thumb Method, which is also very easy, and it's like knitting off your your thumb for the cast on, so when you actually knit your first row, the stitches stay very even and you don't end up with the loops or long spaces between stitches.
