Knitting pattern confusion?

Gauge: 13 rows = 4"

Back: CO 65(73,79) sts. Work 1x1 rib for 5 rows, then 5 rows of st st .Dec 1 st at each end of next row and every 4th row 6(7,8) more times, 51(57,61) sts. Work even until 6 _ (7, inches from beginning.

According to the gauge, the piece should already be about 10 inches long after the decreases, right? The first 10 rows, plus the 24 rows for the decreases (I am making the smallest size) is 34 rows, which should come to about 10.5 inches....so how are you supposed to continue even if the piece is already longer than six inches. Is this a pattern error, or am I missing something here?

yes that is a pattern error, after the decreases the piece is already 10.7 inches long. i suggest that you contact that website and tell them about the pattern error. they should give you the correct instruction and take a second look at the pattern to make sure that its not something that you did by accident.
