big needle knitting patterns
If the knitting pattern calls for size 10 needles, could I use my 10.5 needles?
I was just curious if it would make a big difference because if not, I don't want to make a special trip to the store (this will be my first time knitting)
The pattern is for a string bag which is just a loose netted sack-like back with straps
It depends on what you're making and how picky you are about size.
If it's an article of clothing, I would stick to the recommended size. It's also recommended that you do a swatch beforehand to measure how it will turn out with the way you knit. Some people knit tight, some loose, some in between.
If it's a afghan, scarf, potholder or the like, something that doesn't have to be exact. To be honest, I have never done a gauge swatch and use a slightly different size needles at times. But, I've only made one sweater and didn't care if it was a little off because I made it for myself.
Anyhow, that's the nice thing about knitting, it can be quite versatile and flexible! Have fun!
