beginner knitting scarf
how to knit a split into a scarf?
hi, i am a total beginner knitter! and would like to knit a scarf with a little split in it, i guess it could be called a "keyhole scarf"... so that i can pass one side through i to tie around the neck... pictures would be great to help me along because i don't understand knitting jargon! i have knitted a few scarfs... so plain knitting i can do, it's just how to do the hole...

For a vertical slit, knit to the point where you want the split to start, knit the first half of your stitches, put the rest on a holder and knit just the first side. When your slit is 2 to 3 inches long, break your yarn, put the stitches you just finished on a second holder, put the first group of stitches back on the holder, rejoin your yarn and work the other group the same number of rows as the first group. When you have the same length/number of rows, turn and work across both groups of stitches with the working yarn. Alternatively you can work both sides at the same time with one ball of yarn.
Another means of working a vertical opening is to knit to the point you want it to start, and then knit one stitch, slip the next to a holder across and work just on the stitches on your knitting needle for the length you want, then, using a second ball of yarn, knit up the stitches on another needle from the holder to the same length, then alternately knit one stitch from each needle until they are all back on one needle.
